Lysa Vola

College: Williams College Hometown: Jensen Beach, FL

My name is Lysa Vola, I’m from Jensen Beach, Florida, but currently a freshman at Williams College, in Williamstown, MA. I come from a very large family, in which I am one of seven adopted children. I danced as a competitive dancer for several years, and also sang in an auditioned performance choir in high school. I attended Jensen Beach High School, where I participated in the National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Student Government, and the School Advisory Council, as an elected voting student member. My junior year of high school I was elected class president, and my senior year, I was elected as a member of my school district’s All County Academic team, nominated as a National Soroptimist Woman of Distinction/ Rising Star, named as a QuestBridge college match finalist and a Florida Academic Pathfinder Award winner, and graduated as the salutatorian of my high school class.

My most significant achievement thus far, was being accepted into the MIT MITES (Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science) Program for a seven week summer institute where I was also given the opportunity to conduct research in genomics at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

I have always pictured college in my future. However, it wasn’t until my junior year of high school when I realized that I had the potential to possibly attend a top tier university. I never pictured high end colleges to be affordable for my family. However, after looking into various colleges, I discovered how many colleges are willing to give students like myself, financial aid to pursue their education. I embody a hard working scholar, who has persevered in the face of hardship. I hold onto my academics so dearly, because I know that they are the one thing that no one can take away from me.

My favorite quote is, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, ambition inspired, and success achieved.” (Helen Keller)
